South African Police Service (SAPS) National Spokesperson Brigadier Athlenda Mathe says the police and their legal department will consult with suspended Mpumalanga Police Commissioner Lieutenant General Daphney Semakaleng Manamela over what she has described as explosive allegations of corruption and maladministration in the province.
Mathe says once the allegations have been formally assessed, the matter will be referred to the appropriate investigative units for further action.
She has, however, emphasised that SAPS operational services remain intact and are not affected.
“We have been following the conspiracy, and the general is making serious allegations that cannot be taken lightly and ignored. Let’s firstly state that any allegations of misconduct, wrongdoing, interference, whether criminal or political or any organisational failure are treated by the SAPS with the utmost seriousness, irrespective of the rank or position of those involved,” adds Mathe.

Meanwhile, Manamela has levelled serious allegations against National Police Commissioner General Fannie Masemola, claiming he failed to act on warnings she raised about corruption within the province.
Manamela alleges that Masemola instead chose to believe what she describes as a campaign of propaganda against her, leading to her second suspension.
She says she made several unsuccessful attempts to reach the National Commissioner before eventually being summoned to a meeting. According to Manamela, she was forced to abandon prior commitments to attend but was not allowed into the commissioner’s office.
Instead, she alleges that she was made to wait in what she believes was a storeroom.
Manamela further claims she noticed recording and listening devices at the venue while she was kept waiting. – Reporting by Xoliswa Makhikhi
