Sports Correspondent – CAPS United strengthened their position at the summit of the Castle Lager Premier Soccer League standings after edging TelOne FC 1-0 in a Matchday 8 clash at Rufaro Stadium on Sunday.
The decisive moment came in the opening half when Takunda Benhura found the back of the net, giving CAPS United a lead they held onto for the remainder of the contest. TelOne were unable to mount a comeback, leaving empty-handed at full-time.
The victory takes CAPS United to 19 points, opening a two-point gap over second-placed Hardrock FC, who now sit on 17 points following a 2-2 stalemate with Ngezi Platinum Stars.
Hardrock’s goals came from Munyaradzi Diro and Washington Navaya, while Malvern Gaki and Ashwin Karengesha ensured Ngezi shared the spoils.
At Mandava Stadium, FC Platinum were also held to a 2-2 draw by MWOS in a lively encounter. Abraham Tjahikika and Trevor Bhunu scored for the hosts, while Prince Magondo and Wilson Mensah replied for MWOS.
The match ended on a tense note, with both sides reduced to ten men after Tadiwa Muchenje and Jeremiah Makangira were shown red cards late on.
In other fixtures, Agama and Simba settled for a 2-2 draw, while Triangle United secured a 2-0 victory over Manica Diamonds.
