By A Correspondent — Controversial businessman Wicknell Chivayo has delivered a high-value donation to Ronald Mujuru, weeks after a devastating road accident claimed the lives of Mujuru’s wife and five children in one of the most tragic recent family losses in Zimbabwe.
The fatal crash, which wiped out nearly his entire immediate family, left Mujuru facing both emotional and financial distress. The incident drew widespread public sympathy, with calls for support intensifying as details of the scale of the tragedy emerged.
In response, Chivayo dispatched representatives to hand over a 2026 Toyota Fortuner 2.8 GD-6, valued at approximately US$80,000, along with US$50,000 in cash. He also extended a separate gesture to Mujuru’s close friend, gifting him a Toyota Aqua in recognition of what he described as steadfast support during the bereavement period.
While the donation has been framed as an act of compassion, Chivayo remains a deeply polarising figure in Zimbabwean public life. He has long been associated with controversial state-linked contracts, most notably the disputed Gwanda solar project, which drew scrutiny over alleged irregular payments and lack of delivery. Critics have frequently questioned the source of his wealth and the motives behind his high-profile philanthropic gestures, often made in politically charged contexts.
Supporters, however, argue that regardless of his business history, such interventions provide immediate relief to individuals facing extraordinary hardship, as in Mujuru’s case.
The donation is likely to reignite debate over the intersection of wealth, politics, and patronage in Zimbabwe, particularly at a time when economic pressures continue to weigh heavily on ordinary citizens.
