Rachel Kolisi shares shocking child abuse case, launches foundation and calls for donations

Rachel Kolisi seeks donations for an 8-year-old girl who suffered abuse

Rachel Kolisi has drawn attention after sharing a disturbing child protection case she says exposes major gaps in South Africa’s response to sexual violence.

In a detailed post, she revealed that an 8-year-old girl was brought to medical attention after a healthcare worker linked to the Impilo Project noticed the child repeatedly falling asleep in class.

A doctor was called in to assess her, and what followed, she said, was devastating.

According to her account, the child had been experiencing ongoing sexual abuse while in foster care.

Once the situation was identified, the Impilo team immediately activated its partners to intervene.

The Department of Social Development (DSD) was approached and, despite being “overwhelmed and under resourced,” provided support within its capacity.

The child was then taken to a Thuthuzela Care Centre, but Rachel noted that no rape kits were available at the facility at the time, which she linked to systemic resource shortages.

“Let that sink in,” she wrote, highlighting the scale of sexual violence in the country, adding that “over 100 rape cases are reported everyday in South Africa, and many others go unreported.”

She further explained that organisations such as Mosaic and Saartjie Baartman Centre later stepped in urgently, ensuring the child and her sibling were moved to a place of safety where they are now receiving care.

Rachel also revealed that she has recently registered the Falling Forward Foundation, which she plans to formally introduce soon.

She said the immediate priority is ensuring that the children and supporting organisations have the resources they need, noting that shelters often rely heavily on donor funding.

She ended her message with a call for donations, urging the public to support ongoing care efforts for survivors and the organisations working on the frontlines.
