Mnangagwa Returns Home From Eswatini With No Solution To Citizens’ Deepening Suffering

Tinashe Sambiri– President Emmerson Mnangagwa has returned to Zimbabwe from Eswatini after attending regional engagements, but concerns remain at home over the country’s worsening economic conditions and the absence of immediate relief measures for struggling citizens.

Mnangagwa had travelled to Eswatini for high-level regional events, including celebrations marking King Mswati III’s 40 years on the throne and his 58th birthday at Somhlolo National Stadium.
While the visit was framed around strengthening diplomatic relations and promoting regional cooperation, critics say it has done little to address the pressing economic challenges facing Zimbabwe.

During his engagements abroad, Mnangagwa reiterated calls for continued infrastructure development and regional integration, insisting that progress must be continuous across African states.

“Every country, big or small, there is no end to development. Development is continuous,” he said. “You cannot have a country which says it has developed enough; it must now rest. That would be overthrown.”

“So, it could be Eswatini, Zimbabwe, whatever country; development is an agenda that never ends. It’s a continuous process,” he added.

However, back home, many Zimbabweans continue to face rising living costs, unemployment, and strained public services, with little visible improvement from ongoing government development rhetoric.
Mnangagwa also described Zimbabwe’s participation in the Eswatini events as a sign of strong bilateral relations and regional solidarity.

“Actually, we feel it’s an honour that we’ve been invited to witness and be part of the celebrations here,” he said. “It shows the brotherhood and the friendly relations that exist between Zimbabwe and the Kingdom here. And we are very happy to be here.”

He further emphasised infrastructure development and trade expansion as key pillars of economic growth, but questions persist over the pace and impact of such initiatives on ordinary citizens’ lives.

“Everything that is tradable, we should trade, including people,” he said, calling for increased movement of goods, services and labour within the region.
Despite ongoing government programmes, including road

rehabilitation and regional agreements, many citizens remain sceptical about whether these initiatives are translating into meaningful economic relief.

Mnangagwa returned to Harare later in the day, where he was received at Robert Gabriel Mugabe International Airport by senior government officials, including Vice Presidents Constantino Chiwenga and Kembo Mohadi.
