Zimbabwean football legend and former striker Evans Gwekwerere has sent a stern warning to local players, urging them to prioritise discipline over financial gain and avoid substance abuse.
Gwekwerere said the growing obsession with money among players is contributing to the rise in drug abuse, which he believes is destroying careers.
“In this age, people think money is everything,” he said. “If they don’t have it, they start doing drugs, which is not good.
“Most of the players are killing their careers because of that abuse. I am advising the players in the PSL not to touch those substances.
“They shorten your career and even your life span.”
The former Dynamos and CAPS United forward, who also played in South Africa, Botswana and Mozambique, is now actively involved in community work.
He is part of Norton Boys, a club he founded as part of efforts to campaign against drug abuse and guide young players towards making better life choices.
