Garwe Counters Chiwenga’s Hezekiah Sermon Amid Deepening ZANU-PF Tension
Tinashe Sambiri– Daniel Garwe has seemingly pushed back against comments made by Vice President Constantino Chiwenga during a recent church sermon, adding fresh intrigue to ongoing political undercurrents within ZANU-PF.
Speaking at a recent party gathering, Garwe addressed the now widely discussed sermon delivered by Chiwenga in Murewa over the weekend. During the church service, Chiwenga referenced the biblical story of King Hezekiah, who pleaded with God for more time after being told by the Prophet Isaiah that his death was imminent.
According to scripture, Hezekiah was granted an extra 15 years.
In his message, Chiwenga noted that the additional years later brought unintended consequences, a statement many observers have interpreted as a veiled comment on the ongoing debate around extending President Emmerson Mnangagwa’s time in office beyond the constitutional limit.
Responding after the sermon circulated on social media, Garwe offered a different reading of the biblical account, arguing that the message had been misunderstood.
“Hezekiah did not beg for more years to rule, but he begged for more years of life,” Garwe said.
He went on to frame the message as a call for prayers focused on life rather than leadership tenure. “We should all take time to pray for our leader to be granted more life whenever we kneel to pray,” he added. “We should pray for our families to be granted more life.”
Garwe is widely associated with efforts backing “Resolution Number One,” a proposal aimed at extending Mnangagwa’s leadership beyond 2028. His remarks come after reviewing the viral sermon clip, which has stirred debate within political circles.
The faction aligned with Garwe has since escalated its stance, calling for Chiwenga to step down, accusing him of undermining the President. Reports suggest the Vice President is opposed to Constitutional Amendment Bill No. 3, a proposed change that could extend Mnangagwa’s rule and potentially reshape the country’s political succession landscape.
