Mavetera Defends Sean Mnangagwa Promotion, Says It Was Earned on Merit
Tinashe Sambiri– ICT Minister Tatenda Mavetera has publicly congratulated Lt. Col. Sean Mnangagwa following his promotion within the military, pushing back against criticism and questions surrounding the advancement.
In a statement issued on Wednesday, Mavetera described the promotion as deserved and in line with established procedures within the defence forces.
“My congratulations to my brother Lt. Col. Sean Mnangagwa, together with others he was promoted with, on their well earned promotions,” she said.
Addressing concerns over whether the elevation was based on merit, she insisted that the process followed standard protocols. “In any professional defence force, advancement is governed by regulation, proven merit, and a verified service record, and all who were promoted today followed the exact route,” Mavetera stated.
She also drew on Zimbabwe’s liberation war history to support her argument, noting that rank and leadership have not always been tied to age.
“Our own liberation history teaches us that talent and courage are not prisoners of a birthdate. In the early 1980s, battlefield commissioned comrades carried the rank of brigadier general at just 26 years old,” she said.
Mavetera went on to praise President Emmerson Mnangagwa for recognising leadership qualities.
“President Emmerson Mnangagwa has always known how to recognise leadership when he sees it,” she added.
Highlighting the importance of generational renewal within the armed forces, she remarked, “What pleases me most is seeing young officers rise to field grade command. That is how an institution regenerates itself. We hope to continue to see many more such promotions across our ranks fairly, transparently and without fear.”
She concluded with a personal message to the newly promoted officer: “To my brother Sean, wear your new rank with the same quiet dedication that earned it. We are proud of you.”
