Auxillia Mnangagwa’s Cookout Sends False Signal Of Stability Amid Deepening Turmoil In Zimbabwe

Tinashe Sambiri– A recent high-profile cookout hosted by Auxillia Mnangagwa during the Zimbabwe International Trade Fair (ZITF) has sparked debate, with critics arguing that such events project an image of normalcy that contrasts sharply with the country’s ongoing economic and social challenges.

The event, held at the First Lady’s Amai’s Kitchen initiative, brought together diplomats and dignitaries for what was described as a celebration of culture, food, and unity. Among the notable guests was Duma Boko, who attended alongside Emmerson Mnangagwa.

In a statement issued last week, the First Lady highlighted the significance of the gathering, presenting it as a platform for cultural exchange and international goodwill.

“I was delighted to host diplomats for a cookout competition at my Amai’s Kitchen during ZITF, where we shared cooking, culture, and friendship. I sincerely appreciate their participation as we continue to promote unity, heritage, and healthy living,” she said.

“I also had the honour of welcoming His Excellency President Duma Boko of Botswana, who toured the kitchen and observed the cookout alongside my husband, President Mnangagwa, witnessing this vibrant cultural exchange.”

“His visit was a great honour and reflected the spirit of friendship and goodwill shared between our peoples. Also seeing diplomats come together to share traditional cuisines from across the world was truly uplifting, as food continues to speak a universal language of peace and understanding.”

However, the event has drawn criticism from observers who say such displays of celebration risk masking the hardships faced by many Zimbabweans, including rising living costs, unemployment, and strained public services.

Some analysts argue that while cultural diplomacy and engagement with the international community are important, high-profile events of this nature may create a perception of stability that does not fully reflect conditions on the ground.

The cookout, though widely publicised as a symbol of unity and heritage, has therefore become part of a broader conversation about the gap between official narratives and everyday realities in Zimbabwe.
