THE PHOENIX OF ZIMBABWE: CDE EMMERSON DAMBUDZO MNANGAGWA …A Legacy Written in Gold, A Record Carved in Stone
By Dr Masimba Mavaza.
History is not made by the timid. It is forged in fire, tested by poison, and sealed by destiny. In the chronicles of Zimbabwe, one name now thunders across the pages of time: Cde Emmerson Dambudzo Mnangagwa — a man of breaking records, a statesman sculpted by struggle, and a leader whose journey defies the ordinary.
I. FROM THE GALLOWS TO THE THRONE
This is the man who stared death in the face and did not blink. In the dark winter of the liberation struggle, his name was etched in the black books of death. Prison walls rose like mountains around him, and the noose of the colonial gallows cast its shadow. Yet providence intervened. It was his youth — tender, unripe for the grave — that pulled him out and away from the death sentence. The boy who was to hang became the man who would lead.
He drank from the cup of poison in later years, and still he rose. Twice touched by death, twice spared by fate. Such is the man who now sits at the helm of the Republic.
PULL QUOTE:
“Twice touched by death, twice spared by fate — the boy who was to hang became the man who would lead.”
II. THE FIRST OF HIS KIND
Zimbabwe had never seen it before. He became the first Deputy President to ascend to the Presidency — not by accident, but by the steady hand of history. The baton of leadership was passed to him in a moment of great national turning, and he seized it with the calm of a soldier and the vision of a statesman.
Upon the continental stage, his stature grew. He wore the chairman’s chain of SADC with dignity, and later, the mantle of the African Union rested upon his shoulders. From Cape to Cairo, his voice carried the hopes of a region. In his hands, Zimbabwe’s name was lifted from the footnotes and placed back in the paragraphs of global discourse.
III. THE GOLDEN SEAL OF DIPLOMACY
Under his stewardship, the nation’s human rights record gleamed, polished to an ‘A’. The world took notice. Doors once bolted began to creak open. With wisdom as his weapon and words as his shield, he used his mouth to ease the burden of sanctions that had weighed upon the people for decades. He brought Zimbabwe to the very threshold of a seat at the United Nations — close enough to hear the echo of her name in the chambers of power.
PULL QUOTE:
“With wisdom as his weapon and words as his shield, he used his mouth to ease the burden of sanctions.”
IV. THE PEOPLE’S HOUSE AND THE FIRST LADY’S HEART
His terms have been marked by a tenderness rarely seen in the palaces of power. The promotion of women became a cornerstone of his era, led by a true People’s Person — his wife, the First Lady, Amai Auxillia Mnangagwa. Through her, the plight of the rural mother found a microphone. Through her hands, the orphans were embraced, the widows were clothed, and the girl child was sent to school with dignity. Where he governed, she nurtured. Where he legislated, she comforted. Together, they built a People’s House.
V. A LEGACY AT THE CROSSROADS
He created a legacy which will be engraved in our hearts — a legacy written in gold, meant to glimmer for generations unborn. Yet even gold can be dulled by neglect. Today, whispers in the corridors of diplomacy speak of downgrading the nation’s human rights status to B or C.
This eclipse is not inevitable. It is avoidable. If the resources of the state are channelled with vigilance and wisdom to defending his legacy and the honour of the country, the golden quill need not be broken. The ink of history is still wet. The pen is still in our hands.
VI. THE VERDICT OF TIME
Cde Emmerson Dambudzo Mnangagwa is the phoenix who rose from prison ashes. He is the survivor of poison, the escapee of the gallows, the chairman of continents, the easer of sanctions. He is the husband of the People’s Mother and the father of a new narrative.
Let the nation guard what has been built. Let the gold not be traded for dust. For when the final chapter is written, let it be said: He came, he endured, he lifted, and he left behind a record that even time will struggle to break.
The sun must not set on this chapter. Not yet.
