Terms you must know when Studying Literature

1.Anti jacobin

Term derived from the short lived journal THE ANTI-JACOBIN(1797-8) which was founded to oppose the radical views current at the end the 18th century. The term is now used in literature, particularly novels that continue this traditional approach

2.Authorial voice

This is the voice of the author of the literary work

3.Direct speech

This representation in a narrative of a character’s words as they are actually supposed to be spoken, not modified by being reported. They are normally in inverted commas.

4.Epistolary novel

A genre of fiction in which a story is told entirely or almost entirely through letters. 

5.Symbolism

The use of symbols in a work of literature or other art.a symbol is something which represents something else.eg a rose representing love.

6.Tone

The words an author chooses in a literary work may impact a particular mood, dictate manner.

7.Satire

Literature that examines vice and folly and makes them appear ridiculous.its ussualy morrally censourious- using laughter as a means of attack. however, it is a matter of debate weather laughter serves the purpose of reinforcing rather than undermining the status quo.

8.Voice

The person whom is speaking or narrating.

9.romanticism

This is the discovery of new relationship with nature.*note- the ‘r’ is not capitalized…why? because when its capitalized it applies to the period of literary history.

10.Omniscient narrator

A storyteller with total, godlike knowledge of the narratives’ innermost thoughts and activities.

11.Juxtapose

This is putting side by side for a close comparison

12.Assonance

Repetition of the similar vowel sounds

13.Rhyme

Repetition of the same consonance sounds.Note the difference between assonance and rhyme

14.Stanza

Paragraphs in poetry are called stanza- a unit of a poem.

15.Characterization

 A study of the author’s characterization offers the most immediate means of beginning a critical approach to the novel as a whole. this is to depict someone in a particular way.

16.Theme

These are issues or topics raised in a novel. a novel might just have one main theme.

17.Setting

This is where all the things or action is happening in the novel. for example in a rural area or town..etc

18.Narrative modes

Whether the novel is written in direct speech…omniscient narrative etc

19.Language and style

Pretty clear language and styles used by the author eg indirect speech,symbolism etc

20.Alliteration

Is the repetition of the same consonants sounds
