ZIMSEC A Level Literature Setbooks for November 2022 and June 2023

Paper 1

This is a compulsory paper. Four(4) questions will be set and candidates will be required to answer any two. The passages will be drawn from poetry, drama and prose. One of the questions may involve a comparison of passages and another may offer the opportunity for imaginative response.

Paper 2

Zimbabwean Literature – 3 hours

This paper is compulsory. It has three Sections. Section A (Zimbabwean Poetry) Section B (Zimbabwean Drama) and Section C (Zimbabwean Prose). Candidates are expected to answe three questions. One from each section.

Section A Poery: Bvuma S Thomas – Every Stone that Turns. Mhasvi Roland E – The flowers of yesterday.

Section B Drama: Baya Raisedom – Tomorrow’s People and Other Plays. George Mujajati – The Rain of my blood.

Section C – Prose: Chidavaenzi K.Phillip – The ties that bind. Ndhlala Geoffrey – Jikinya

Paper 3

African, Caribbean and African-American Literature

This paper is optional. The paper consist of three sections. Section A – African Literature, Section B – Caribbean Literature and Section C – African-American Literature. Candidates will be required to answer three questions, one from each section where there are two set texts.

Section A – African Literature: Mirriama Ba – So Long a Letter, Bessie Head – Maru

Section B – Caribbean Literature: V.S. Naipual – Miguel Street, Edward Braithwaite – The Arrivants: A New World Trilogy (Rights of Passage, Island and Masks)

Section C – African American Literature: Richard Wright – Native Son, Frederick Douglass – Narrative of the life of Frederick Douglass An American Slave

Paper 4

This paper is optional. It has three sections on English Drama, prose and poetry. Six texts are offered – two in each section. Candidates must answer one question from each section.

Section A – Drama: Harold Pinter – The Caretaker, William Shakespeare – Twelfth nigh

Section B – Prose: Thomas Hardy – The Mayor of Casterbridge, Charlotte Bronte – Jane Eyre

Section C – Poetry: William Blake – Songs of Innocence and of Experience, Robin Malan – POEMscapes NB- Selected Poets only: Shakespeare, D.H.Lawrence, John Donne etc (find the pdf below)

Paper 5

This paper is optional and consists of works on prose, poetry and drama writers from all over the world. Candidates will be required to answer three questions. The questions must be from each one of three sections.

Section A – Prose: John Boyne – The Boy in Stripped Pyjamas, Ama Ata Aidoo – The girl Who can and Other Stories.

Section B – Poetry: Susan Joubert (Compiler) – The Living Tradition, William Shakespeare’s selected poems (see pdf below)

Section C – Drama: Goodrich F. & Hackett A – The Diary of Anne Frank, Henrik Ibsen – A Doll’s House
