Mnangagwa Boasts Of Economic Growth Despite Worsening Political Crisis In Zimbabwe

Tinashe Sambiri– At the 2026 Independence Day celebrations held at Maphisa Stadium in Maphisa, President Emmerson Mnangagwa presented an optimistic account of the country’s economy, even as political tensions and instability continue to cast a shadow over Zimbabwe’s future.

Speaking to attendees on Saturday, Mnangagwa insisted that the nation’s economic trajectory is improving, despite growing concerns over governance, democratic space, and increasing discontent among citizens.

“The economy is expanding, and our foreign currency reserves are steadily increasing,” Mnangagwa said, projecting confidence in his administration’s economic direction.
His remarks come at a time when critics argue that the country is grappling with a deepening political crisis marked by allegations of repression, shrinking civic space, and heightened tensions ahead of key constitutional debates.

Mnangagwa further claimed that “following a series of reforms, inflation has been brought under control, helping to stabilize the ZiG currency.” However, many Zimbabweans remain skeptical, citing continued price instability and declining purchasing power.

Highlighting key economic drivers, the President said “gold, tobacco, and platinum, along with diaspora remittances, are driving national growth and improving the ease of doing business.”

Yet observers question whether the benefits of this growth are reaching ordinary citizens or remain concentrated among a small elite.

He also maintained that “ongoing reviews of taxes and levies are further enhancing the business environment,” despite widespread complaints from businesses struggling with high costs and policy uncertainty.

Mnangagwa added that this year’s Independence celebrations were being held “against the backdrop of a successful agricultural season,” though concerns persist about whether improved yields are translating into meaningful food security for vulnerable communities.

As the government continues to promote a message of economic recovery, critics argue that ignoring the worsening political climate risks undermining any gains, leaving many Zimbabweans doubtful about the true state of the nation.
