Mnangagwa Regime Announces ZIMSEC Exams Mandatory From 2027

Tinashe Sambiri– The government has confirmed a sweeping policy shift that will compel all schools in Zimbabwe to enroll learners for examinations administered by the Zimbabwe School Examinations Council (ZIMSEC), beginning in 2027.

Speaking in the Senate this week, Primary and Secondary Education Minister Torerayi Moyo said the move is aimed at standardising assessment across both public and private institutions under a single national system.

He explained that the policy is rooted in existing legal provisions requiring a unified curriculum across the country.
“Starting next year, all the schools in this country are going to offer one examination, Zimbabwe School Examination Council,” Moyo said.
“It will be mandatory for all the schools in Zimbabwe. The law says there must be one curriculum.”

According to the minister, every school will be expected to comply with the ZIMSEC framework by 2027, ensuring uniformity in how learners are assessed nationwide.

“In 2027, every school must be offering Zimbabwe School Examination Council Examinations,” he added.

However, Moyo noted that exceptions could be granted to institutions wishing to maintain international examination systems such as Cambridge Assessment International Education, provided they can clearly demonstrate how students will manage both sets of examinations.

“But we have allowed them if they think their students are bright, are intelligent enough, they can offer both Cambridge and ZIMSEC, but they must justify how they are going to achieve it,” he said.

The announcement signals a significant tightening of government control over the education system, particularly for private schools that have traditionally leaned toward international examination boards.
