WE ARE COMING
Two thousands years have we watched and waited.
In a million homes voices have wailed their hymns,
As men watched first from tree-top dwellings,
Then from the east that parled yonder hills
Bleached in the sun that streamed down ever so silent.
They watched till their eyes turned dust-blind,
And still the promised Coming was yet to be born.
Never again, not if the world were to smoke to hell,
Never shall we watch the pale glow of the Eastern sky,
For the coming is here- We are coming.
Let the stars twinkle ever so bright, let the moon flare;
Or let the sun pale upon the night-blackened skies,
And let the Earth shudder to a grinding halt,
We have done with mourning for a Second Coming
Let it come when it will, but we shall not wait.
The Earth’s golden veins we have plundered true:
The liquid fires that lay calm beneath the deserts
We have suckled our thundering machines upon:
The iron ores than ran like bones through the Earth
We have fractured in a thousand mortal places;
While the radioactive cancers we have discovered
And packed them into little metal capsules that plop
When they cure in mushroom clouds of heat and dust
We’ve been a long time in our final coming,
And often have we stumbled among the stars
Where our mission have sojourned
Far beyond Heaven’s Throne.
The Black Holes of Space, far worse than homely Hell,
Have we skirted round and probed with laser beams.
On new found lands have we built our new Shrines
Where labs, not Churches, hold our test tube mangers,-
Where our measured offerings are stewed in acid.
We dont need the second coming, We of Tomorrow.
All our schemes our Science and Technogods shall serve:
Nature we shall tame and teach our newer creeds.
men of science shall our new Messiahs be
Born and bred in test tubes of Virgin Mothers too!
Our faith shall for ever be medalled on Mother Science
Who the master race of Man has chosen heirs.
Come then, if you must, but We are already Come.
P/S
If perchance our man-made world we flame with Science,
And our oceans are mucked thick in industrial sludge,
That might perhaps black our Earth for-
The third coming?
For already We are here, Lord,
And We are the Second Coming.
